Named for the founders of our historic 1885 winery, our Rennie Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a three-acre block on the Flora Springs Estate in the far southwest corner of the St. Helena appellation. We’ve farmed this piece of land for over 30 years, and with its well matched clone to soil selection and proper row orientation it is arguably the finest of our 350 acres of Napa Valley vineyard land. We call it Block C, a percentage of which we use to create our Rennie Reserve Cabernet. The excellent 2016 vintage produced a dark, rich, highly concentrated wine with broad swaths of dark plum, fresh-baked berry pie and warm cassis. The abundant fruit is joined by notes of coffee, mocha and creamy vanilla on a mid-palate that is plush and open-textured. A hint of earth and California bay leaf add complexity, and the firm yet supple tannins bring this Cabernet to a long-lasting finish. A pleasure to drink now, this wine can easily go the distance for 10 to 15 years.

On the Vine

An early bud break followed by warm weather and spring rains brought a rapid start to an ideal 2016 growing season, one with beautiful weather from bloom, to berry set, to veraison and harvest in our Napa Valley estate vineyards. Our winemaker and vineyard managers – Paul Steinauer and Pat and Sean Garvey - worked closely together as the season progressed to ensure grapes ripened uniformly, adjusting vine canopies, thinning fruit and keeping a close eye on soil moisture. The harvest began in mid-August and wrapped up by mid-October, just ahead of the valley’s first significant fall rainstorm.

"Bold, with towering cassis, raspberry and cherry preserve flavors holding sway over licorice, toasted apple wood and vanilla notes. Drink now through 2028."

"Deep ruby color; rich berry nose; satiny texture and rich flavors of plum, raspberry and blueberry; generous, lush and mouth-filling, notes of toast and gentle spice; another in the Grand Estate Tradition series from this great, under-appreciated winery."

"This has an array of very ripe dark plums and blackberries with plenty of mocha oak on the nose and palate. The texture is open-knit and plush and the concentration is good. Dark berries and chocolate with plush, ripe tannins to close. Drink or hold."

"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rennie Reserve has a deep purple-black color and nose of baked blackberries, stewed plums and cassis with hints of bay leaves, fragrant earth, chargrill and tar. The palate is full-bodied, very firm and chewy with a lively line lifting the baked berries and earthy layers to a long finish."
