2016 Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot is one of the noble red varietals of Bordeaux, valued by winemakers for the deep color, strong tannins and pronounced fruit flavors it adds to traditional red wine blends. We’ve planted small blocks of the variety in our Oakville and Rutherford vineyards, and often use it to add strength and complexity to our Trilogy red wine. We also bottle a small amount of the late-ripening variety on its own for a wine we offer exclusively to club members and winery visitors. Our 2016 Petit Verdot is a dark, juicy wine offering saturated flavors of blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry, notes of dark chocolate and vanilla custard, and refreshing hints of pepper and wild chaparral. This is a nicely-oaked, fruit-forward wine built for enjoyment, one that flows easily over the palate into a long and mouthwatering finish. Drinkable now, this wine can also go the distance with a tannic profile that is pronounced yet balanced.

On the Vine

An early bud break followed by warm weather and spring rains brought a rapid start to the 2016 growing season, a near perfect year with beautiful weather from bloom, to berry set, to veraison and harvest. Napa Valley winemakers and vineyard managers worked closely together as the season progressed to ensure grapes ripened uniformly, adjusting vine canopies, thinning fruit and keeping a close eye on soil moisture. The harvest began in mid-August and wrapped up by mid-October, just ahead of the valley’s first significant fall rainstorm.
